Document Overview

This document is a portion of the genealogy of the Nardi Family.  Its focus is on tracing the ancestors of Joseph Ragucci & Rose Ciaccio Ragucci and Rosalie Ragucci-Cook from the Nardi families.   Although the focus will be on “blood” relatives and not in-laws or adopted members of the families, these individuals will be identified wherever possible.

1        Nardi Family History

The Nardi Family has its roots in the Naples region of Italy (on the slopes of Mt. Vesuvius) in the town of Marcianise.  During the start of the 20th century, members of the Nardi family came to the United States looking for work.  Eventually members of that family settled in New Jersey. There is a single family that settled in New Jersey:

Amedeo (Matteo) Nardi and his wife Giavonna (Jennie) - who settled in Carteret, New Jersey.  The family grew from this couple.

The information found in this family history comes from 2 primary sources.  The first is the immigration records of Ellis Island which provide information on individuals who entered the USA at Ellis Island, NY.  The second source is living members of these families (who in many cases have collaborated the Ellis Island records) while providing information on the families after they arrived in the USA.

We have limited information because many of the family members were deceased when this family history search began.

1.1     Generation -3rd: Immigration to the US

Information about the Nardi family is limited for generation -3rd and before since there are limited family members still alive (none now!).  The parents are typically born in the range 1870-1890 and the children are typically born in the range 1900-1920.

Amadeo (Matteo) Nardi was born in 1879 in Marcianise, Italy; died in 1961 in Elizabeth,NJ.

Matteo married Jennie (Cercero) Nardi. Jennie was born in 1875 in Marcianise, Italy; died in 1961 in Elizabeth,NJ.

They had 5 children:

·     Guiseppe (Joseph) Nardi was born in 1903 in Italy; died on 4 May 1993 in Perth Amboy, NJ.

·     Pasquale Nardi was born on 15 Mar 1905 in Italy; died on 30 Mar 1991 in the Bronx, NY.

·     Ester (Nardi) Turco was born in 1913 in Carteret, NJ; died on 16 Jan 1975.

·     Anna (Nardi) Kushlyk was born on 26 Feb 1916 in Carteret, New Jersey; died on 26 Jan 2010 in Lakewood, NJ; was buried on 28 Jan 2010 in St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ.

·     Rose (Nardi) Ragucci was born on 17 Apr 1918 in Carteret, NJ; died on 18 Jul 1950 in Elizabeth, NJ; was buried in St. James Cemetery, Woodbridge NJ.

1.1.1   Amedeo (Matteo) Nardi

Here is the information that we know mostly from the Ellis Island manifest:

·     Matteo (Grandpa Nardi) grew up in Marcianise, Italy on the mountainside of Mt Etna near Naples (thus he was a Neapolitan).

·     He was born in 1879 and was an adopted child and worked as a poor farm hand.  He was not able to read or write.

·     He arrived at Ellis Island, NY on the Ship Celtic sailing from Naples on Feb 11, 1906.  He was 27 years old and went to his “brother” in NY City.

·     He eventually owned a fruit stand in Manhattan but didn’t own the building.

·     He moved to Carteret because the Mafia (Black Hand), extorted him for payment and he was afraid to live there with his family that was arriving from Italy.

1.1.2   Giavonna (Jennie) Cerece Nardi

Here is the little information that we know mostly from the Ellis Island manifest:

·     Gennie (Grandma Nardi) also grew up in Marcianise, Italy on the mountainside of Mt Etna near Naples (thus he was a Neapolitan).

·     However, she belonged to a wealthy family named Cerece and could read and write.  She listed her sister Rosa as her closest relative in Italy.

·     Her family disowned her when she married Matteo.

·     She arrived at Ellis Island, NY on the Ship Adriatic sailing from Naples on March 27, 1912 six years after her husband.  She was 37 years old and went to her husband who was living in Chrome (Carteret), NJ.

·     We believe that she came to US with lots of jewelry (coming from a wealthy family) but lost it all due to psychic readers.

·     She came to US with sons Guiseppe (Joseph) age 9 and Pasquale (Pat) age 7 who were born in Italy.  She gave birth to 3 other children in the US, Ester, Anna, and Rose.
